Rep. Lujan Grisham Signature Care Corps Grants Passed & Funded

Celebration of Lifelong Effort to Support Caregivers, Seniors & Individuals with Disabilities

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Wednesday, September 26, 2018, the House of Representatives voted to pass the fiscal year 2019 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS) appropriations bill, which included $5 million in funding for Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s signature Care Corps grants. These grants would place volunteers in communities to provide non-medical services to seniors and individuals with disabilities so that they can continue to live independently in their homes and communities.

Rep. Lujan Grisham, who saw her parents struggle as her sister’s caregivers growing up and now serves as a caregiver for her mother, has a lifelong passion for fighting for seniors and those living with disabilities. She has been working to enact and fund a bipartisan program for caregivers since being elected to Congress in 2013.

“As a caregiver myself, I know how tough it can be to care for a loved one, and how little support is available to those doing this critical work,” said Lujan Grisham. “One of my top priorities, since being elected to Congress nearly 6 years ago, has been to create a caregiving volunteer program. Care Corps grants will help address the increasing demand for caregiving in New Mexico and the nation, as well as give volunteers the experience of working with seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. I am grateful to my colleagues for their continued support. Working together we ensured that this funding was passed into law so that Care Corps can begin to benefit families, caregivers, and individuals in need of care across the country. Once enacted, I know that many families just like mine will receive the support they need to care for their loved ones.”

Caregiving Facts:

  • By 2030, there will be more than 72 million older Americans, making up 19% of the total population.
  • Currently, the vast majority of care is provided by family caregivers; more than 40 million Americans provide more than $470 billion in care to seniors and adults with disabilities every year.
  • In 2010, there were seven potential caregivers for every person over the age of 80. By 2030, that ratio is projected to drop by almost half, to 4:1.
  • In the paid workforce, more than 4 million direct care workers provide long-term supports and services. That workforce will need to grow by more than 1 million direct care workers over the next ten years in order to keep up with the growing demand.
