Rep. Lujan Grisham Reaction to SCOTUS Ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop Case

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (NM-01) released the following statement after the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission:

“Today’s decision reminds us not only how far we have come to protect longstanding civil rights laws, but also how far we have to go to ensure that Charlie Craig, David Mullins and all LGBTQ people are free from discrimination because of who they are or whom they love.

“Although this narrow decision does not give businesses the ability to discriminate universally, it does not uphold the rights and fundamental pillars of human dignity enshrined in the Civil Rights Act more than 50 years ago. When a business decides to open its door to the public, that business must be open to every person, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

“That is why Congress must act without delay to pass the bipartisan Equality Act to provide clear and consistent non-discrimination protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.”
