Rep. Lujan Grisham on GOP Minibus Legislation

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement after Congress passed FY 2019 Energy and Water Development/Leg Branch/Military Construction-Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill (H.R. 5895). The funding package bill includes problematic cuts to renewable energy programs, dangerous gun safety riders, and weakens environmental protections.

“This partisan legislation does not truly reflect the priorities of the American people and our economy.  The troubling cuts to renewable energy programs that fund ground-breaking research and development programs at our state’s national laboratories undermine our ability to invest in our economy and promote an all-of-the-above energy strategy, especially at a time when gas prices are soaring.

“Further, the bill includes crippling cuts to nuclear non-proliferation efforts, dangerous changes to gun safety rules, and weakens environmental and endangered species protections. It is shameful that funding important bipartisan veterans programs is jeopardized by unrelated poison pill riders.

“New Mexicans deserve a process that gives them input in how their hard-earned dollars are spent. I simply cannot vote for legislation that does not invest in critical priorities that grow our economy, create jobs, and honor our obligations to the people we serve.  I remain committed to resolving these issues with my colleagues before the end of the fiscal year.”
