Representing the 1st District of New Mexico

No Cuts to Social Security

Apr 12, 2013
Press Release

Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham has taken a strong stance against cuts to Social Security.

In February 2013, she joined 106 of her Democratic Colleagues and sent a letter to President Obama stating their opposition to the use of chained CPI to calculate cost of living adjustments for Social Security benefeciars. You can read that letter here.

In response to the President's budget that sought to implement chained CPI, the Congresswoman sent a letter with Congressman Ben Ray Lujan (NM-03) on April 16, 2013 once again reiterating her opposition. You can read that letter here.

In addition, the Congresswoman released the following statement.

“As a caregiver for my mother I know Social Security provides the help and support needed to some of the most vulnerable New Mexicans, including the elderly, disabled and former service members. I remain strongly opposed to cutting Social Security benefits through the use of the chained CPI to calculate cost-of-living adjustments. I am committed to increasing the strength and solvency of Social Security for all Americans receiving Social Security now and for generations to come.”
