Lujan Grisham Speaks to HHS On Termination of NMAAA Contract

Today, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham spoke with Lance Robertson, Assistant Secretary of Aging at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), regarding the Martinez Administration’s decision to terminate its contract with the Non-Metro Area Agency on Aging (NMAAA).  NMAAA provides critical services like adult day care, meal services, caregiving, transportation, and respite care for tens of thousands of vulnerable seniors throughout New Mexico.  Assistant Secretary Robertson heads the Administration for Community Living which has direct oversight of the State’s decision under the Older Americans Act.

“I spoke with Lance Robertson, Assistant Secretary of Aging at HHS, regarding the State of New Mexico’s reckless actions that could disrupt critical services for 80,000 seniors and their families.  I received assurances that HHS understands the seriousness of the situation and is providing ongoing oversight and technical assistance to the State.  HHS has agreed to send me follow up information regarding the State’s compliance with federal law and regulations under the Older Americans Act as well as the development of a transition plan to ensure continuity of services for New Mexico’s seniors.”
