Lujan Grisham Responds to President's Address to Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement in response to President Trump’s Address to Congress:
“The President in his address highlighted areas that I agree could have a positive and productive impact on New Mexico and the nation’s economy. His call to action to address immigration reform, health care costs, infrastructure investments, tax reform that benefits the middle class, and reinvesting in America’s workforce and products are all areas that can and should have widespread appeal and benefits. Unfortunately, the speech lacked specific detail on making these investments. We are left with only with the draconian proposals in Congress that erode nearly every other benefit for America’s middle class families.
“In addition, the President continued to suggest that crime, drug addiction, and job loss are the direct cause of immigrants, undocumented individuals and communities of color in this country. These divisive and discriminatory statements don’t reflect the values that this country was based on. His emphasis again on building a wall is unproductive policy at best, because its wasteful and unnecessary and doesn’t make us safer. Instead it erodes our relationship with Mexico and creates significant economic hardship for American companies that export to our southern neighbor.
“I stand ready to work with my colleagues to protect my constituents, my state and my country and to work to find beneficial and meaningful strategies to invest in America’s economy.”
