Lujan Grisham Responds to Fraud Charges against Ayudando Guardians
ALBUQUERQUE – Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham released the following statement in response to allegations of conspiracy, fraud, theft and money laundering against Ayudando Guardians, Inc. The U.S. Attorney in New Mexico charged the non-profit guardianship firm of embezzling money from client trust accounts meant for hundreds of individuals with special needs.
“The embezzlement allegations against this guardianship firm are alarming and I am deeply concerned for the hundreds of beneficiaries who were cheated out of money that was intended to help them,” Rep. Lujan Grisham said. “Many of these people are the most vulnerable in our community, and they rely on outside assistance to access and manage their benefits. It’s appalling that anyone would take advantage of people this way.
“I am also very concerned about the lack of any state oversight, and the fact that this embezzlement took place over many years without raising any red flags during Social Security audits. We need to get to the bottom of this egregious lack of accountability.”
Congresswoman Lujan Grisham is receiving updates from the Social Security Administration on the impact of the alleged fraud and efforts to ensure the affected beneficiaries are transitioned to new representative payees.
