Lujan Grisham Opposes GOP’s Fifth Stop-Gap Spending Bill

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham issued the following statement on the fifth short-term continuing resolution proposed by Republican congressional leadership in this fiscal year:

“Government by chaos continues, as Republican congressional leadership is still incapable of passing a budget that meets the needs of the American people.

“Dreamers are losing protection and are at risk of deportation every day. Veterans continue to lack timely, quality health care and services. Our national laboratories and homeland security programs do not have the funding they need to accomplish their national security mission.

“The uncertainty created by these temporary spending bills undermines our military readiness and national security programs, harms small businesses, slows the economy, and damages government services that countless Americans depend on.

“I cannot vote to keep procrastinating on life-threatening issues that Congress has known about and left unaddressed for months. This lack of action hurts New Mexicans as they wait for Congress to do its job.

“I call on Speaker Ryan and the Republican leadership to work in a productive bipartisan fashion to pass a long-term spending bill that addresses America’s most pressing issues. We can’t afford to continue letting the far-right extremists lead our government from crisis to crisis.

“If congressional leaders cannot successfully keep the government functioning for more than a few weeks at a time, how can the American people trust them to fairly address the really big challenges facing the nation?”

The House is expected to vote on its fifth continuing resolution this evening.
